Animal Welfare
Good welfare and good farming go hand in hand. At Ashleigh Farms, we combine daily care, practical experience and research partnerships to continually improve the lives of our animals.

Recognised as European Best Practice
Our approach to piglet welfare was chosen as a Best Practice winner from 192 entries in WelFarmers, an EU-funded project that finds and shares the best pig welfare practices across Europe.
Our practice of Loose Lactation & Piglet Commingling was named a Round 1 winner in the Ban of Cages topic and was formally recognised at the Irish Pig Health Symposium 2026.
Freedom of Movement for Sows
Gestation
All of our sows in gestation are loose-housed in groups. Electronic sow feeding (ESF) stations give each sow her own diet, and she can move freely, eat at her own pace and socialise naturally.

Adaptive Farrowing Pens
All of our lactation sows are in adaptive farrowing pens, which give the sow more freedom to move while still protecting her piglets in the first critical days. We call this approach loose lactation.
Early Piglet Socialisation
From 20 days old, our piglets mix with neighbouring litters. Getting to know other pigs early on means less stress and less fighting at weaning, so the piglets settle better and have a healthier start in life.
